Gnomeo and Juliet

 

Directed by Kelly Asbury, this film is a creative adaptation of the play Romeo and Juliet. In this animated film, the Red Gnomes and the Blue Gnomes hate each other viciously. However Gnomeo (James Mcavory) a blue gnome, and Juliet (Emily Blunt) a red gnome, meet unexpectedly and fall in love. They plan to keep their love a secret, but it is discovered by Gnomeo’s friend Benny (Matt Lucas) who runs off to tell the blues in alarm, but has his hat broken off by Juliet’s cousin Tybalt (Jason Statham). Gnomeo and Tybalt have a feud together, and Tybalt ends up smashed and Gnomeo goes missing. Mr. Capulet (Richard Wilson) determined not to lose his daughter like he lost his wife, glues her to her pedestal in the garden. Meanwhile to avenge Gnomeo, the Blues plan an attack on the Reds. Will Gnomeo and Juliet get back to each other and be able to end the family feud, or will they die in the attempt?

Thoughts- This was a creative way to retell the story of Romeo and Juliet and I found it much more entertaining then actual story of that play. The characters are well formed and this film made me laugh at a lot of parts. However I was very upset about how much skin was shown on some of the gnomes. I didn’t think it was that necessary to focus in on the form of Juliet’s butt when her frog nurse put the sock on her. And I didn’t like that they just had to use a bra for Benny to climb up on to reach the computer. There were also other parts of the film where privet part elements were shown. I know they’re not human, they’re only gnomes, but I didn’t feel those elements were necessary. If they hadn’t put these elements in the film I would let my siblings see it. However I recommend this only to mature children. But if you happen to not worry about those elements in a film it is a great, child, friendly movie.
